4th Grade
Social Studies- Mrs Ferriter
Due: Monday, October 16th, 2023
(4.5 weeks)
Project background: The fourth grade students will begin exploring the major civilizations in Mesoamerica and South America including the Maya, the Aztec, and the Incan. These complex civilizations built expansive cities and elaborate pyramids.
Assignment: Your child will build a model or diorama of an actual temple or pyramid from either the Aztec, Mayan, or the Incan civilization. Your child will choose one of the ancient sites and build a model that resembles their chosen archaeological site.
She/he can build a model of a single pyramid/temple or a diorama/model of a wider view of the location. In other words, the model or diorama can include one particular building or a scene from the ancient town/city. Your child may use ANY material she/he wishes to build their model/ diorama. We would like to display these projects for the rest of the school to see, so I would discourage edible projects.
There is a list of some Mayan, Aztec, and Incan sites on the back of this note, though this is not a complete list. Your child may pick any Mayan, Aztec, or Incan archaeological site.
Project/ Diorama Rubric:
3-dimensional
Project has a clear label or title.
Project is clearly labeled as Aztec, Incan, or Mayan
Project is clearly labeled with the name of the location.
Student name is visible on the project.
Neatness: The project is clearly not finished at the “last minute”. It is evident that some time and thought went into the project.
On time. Due Monday, October 16th, 2023.
Accuracy: project must resemble the chosen location.
Let me know if you have any questions.

~~~The focus of this project should be as a LEARNING PROJECT. We do not want to focus on the “Beauty” of the project. The project is a not competition, it is a learning activity. Your child may have assistance with this project. We are not looking for perfection, we are looking for a fun, educational project. Your child’s project SHOULD look like a child completed it. We don’t want the project to be stressful, but a fun learning activity.
